HHe began his career as part of a dance music composite called Free Frogs. Two decades and change later, his Spinnin’ Records debut “We-R-Superstars” throws back to the future of disco with a video starring nothing but dogs. In between, there have been tracks for FFRR Records and Global Underground, collisions with Justin Timberlake and Jamie Cullen, as well as residencies at Crobar, New York; Avalon Hollywood; Discoteque, Moscow; Redlight, Paris and; Pacha Ibiza. Through it all, his infamously vivid visuals – mind-blowing set pieces that expand the very horizons of EDM.He is Dutch DJ superstar Sander Kleinenberg.
ADANAI: If you had but a single sentence to sum up the sound of Sander Kleinenberg, what would it be?
Sander Kleinenberg: Variations of feel good electronic dance music.
How does that summation play into “We-R-Supertsars”?
Well I guess because it’s ‘make you feel good electronic music!’
How would you say that sound has developed since “Bombay”?
I’m more in control of the end result with my music. The computers don’t run away with me and I get to control the process.
Speaking of city songs, much ado was made of “This is Miami” – are there plans to sound off with other world-class capitals?
Haha! I don’t think so, it was a fun rendition though! “This Is Miami” was a record that fit the time and place perfectly. Here’s a fun fact for you: I actually did a record called ‘Buenos Aires’ back around 2001, which is one of my favourite cities in the world, so maybe there is a pattern here.
What were your plans when you took the stand at Chicago’s Grant Park for Lollapalooza?
Yes, this was my Lollapalooza debut! I played the best possible music I could get my hands on. 🙂
Any other summer activities you care to share with dance fans?
Lots of studio work–a new single to be released soon–and continued to look for that perfect beat. Also, ate cupcakes and visited a few cities every week!
